The author here had the opportunity to connect Harriet's biracial identity to her identity as a half demon and how she feels she doesn't belong in either the demon world or the human world. These experiences could mirror each other + make them more nuanced and more powerful, but Karen completely missed it. Prob because she's a white woman!

To note: So Karen Frost appears to be a white woman. This interaction with the taxi driver "who probably doesn't even speak English" is pretty racist...

If you are going to make your characters women of colour I recommend not doing the below:
"It was amazing how small she could make herself, even in her wool coat. That was her Thai heritage. She was thin as a rice noodle. Theodora, despite her Indian roots, was much bigger boned."
