All one need do is to make friends with the chiefs. I gave away about one hundred rubles' worth of dressing-gowns and carpets, besides a case of tea, and I gave wine to those who would drink it; and I got the land for less than twopence an acre[3]. And he showed Pahóm the title-deeds, saying:

I am going to grade the stories I've read so far in this book, because they seem to be getting worse.
1) The Woodfelling - (A/A+) - I loved this story, the circumstantial choosing of fate
2) Two Hussars - (A) - All-around solid
3) How Much Land Does a Man Need - (C) - Was this some kind of fable?
4) Where Love Is, God Is - (F) - Get this religious sh*t out of here
5) What Men Live By - (D-) - More religious nonsense
