finished the dense introduction to the history of mexican poetry as well as the foreword. it had a lot to say about the role of the poet & their word blending phrase & reality into an image.
I liked the springtime poem by Bernardo de Balbuena, even though it was very flowy it painted a crisp, if exaggerated image of springtime in Mexico by way of allusions to Greek eloquence & seemingly every flora he could think of

the opening was a little bit pretentious but i agree: poetry is what we stay alive for! it is humanity’s very ancient tradition and the loss of it is something to be lamented

Great collection. Skipping around the pages as I read the Opening by Octavio Paz, his insights on the poets providing a connection that I wouldn’t experience if I read the book straight through.
