Tsvetaeva's first works about Pushkin were on the subject of his marriage and subsequent death in a duel. It was very like Tsvetaeva to refuse to accept Pushkin's wife and - as with Akhmatova, who also detested Natalya Goncharova - there was certainly an element of sexual jealousy in her attitude. That this story had played out more than fifty years before either had ever been born was entirely irrelevant to them.

On June 27 Tsvetaeva received a letter from Boris Pasternak - a letter that marked the beginning of a relationship that would light up her life for many years. In this first letter Pasternak placed Tsvetaeva on the same level as the unsullied talents of Mayakovsky and Akhmatova, addressing her as "My dear, golden, incomparable poet". She replied two days later - after leaving his letter to cool off.

Tsvetaeva began to take an interest in clothes and ornaments, but in this as in other things she tried to develop a style of her own. People who met her were surprised to see her wearing not only defiantly unfashionable dresses, but as many silver bracelets and rings, as a gypsy. She had a particular fondness for such things, and praised them more than once.
