the exhaustive, monotonous sections involving musical descriptions (i'm assuming balzac is deliberate with it to demonstrate the true measure of gambara's obsessions and capacity for verbal reasoning in contrast and to show by example the effect on the recipient of the artwork when there's "too much of a good thing"), though miraculously well-incorporated into the easy flow, is supposed to lower my rating somewhat

succinct and meticulous pondering on the conduct of art.. having an eye out for the allegoric value for craftsmanship of all kinds (state-/war-...) provides an additional perspective that i find very intriguing.. great starter for études philosophiques
and seeing how many real life artists this piece reached out to in turn, the bending of fact around fiction as a playful twist to push own narrative becomes excusable

Introduction argument boils down to exertions of great genius remaining unrecognised by the leading "successes" of that particular era, the same genius being relayed onto kantian notions of talent to describe its force also as untranslatable.. is why franhofer's technical explanations feel almost as empty as metaphysics? 🙃
