Why is it that the mentor type characters in this book don't do their jobs an just let the women crash and burn. "It's her life so I won't say anything..."

Dear Cousin Olivia, if you were 16 in 1922, there is no possible way you could've been 12 in 1912 Love, The continuity fairy

Evil aunt is in the picture just long enough to be established as evil. Six years pass and without ceremony Evil Aunt is suddenly dead.

Also, I know her family moved a lot which made staying in touch difficult but wouldn't they be able to contact her? They knew where she was going...

Chapters one and two felt out of order and now in chapter three it's suddenly four years later and the mom has randomly died?

$200 to get across the boarder in 1918, is roughly equal to $2,000 in today's dollars (using a 2.5% inflation rate).

Not really getting the Color Purple connection except for the abuse. Otherwise a pretty good book.

Pretty easy reading, but reads more like a young reader book.
