The second half of the book is more focused on the philosophy of speciesism in our history whilst the first was just cold hard facts about how animals are treated. As you would expect much of the treatment of animals in the western world can be attributed to Roman and then Roman-Catholic philosophy. And then when the suffering could not be avoided, the different justifications people invented to justify killing.

I skipped most of chapter 2 on animal experimentation and chapter 3 on factory farming because I already know enough and I cannot read that shit in detail

"More n' likely, home is a feedlot where the closest a beef comes to the smell of sage is in a pot roast. This is Norris farms. Where instead of 700 heads on 20,000 acres of sparse-green prairie, they run 7000 heads on 11 acres of concrete"

Chapter 1 done
It focuses one two things. Speciesism and how that contributes to the animal experimentation from the early 20th century to today.
Some pretty harrowing, despite Singer's attempts to not go into gory detail, descriptions of real experiments done on animals. All of which produced findings that where effectively useless to us as a species. Examples which are the norm, not the exception.

I anticipate becoming 50% more insufferable after finishing this. Just forewarning.
