"'The carriages drew up in front of the building,' the Charlottesville Central Gazette reported. 'As soon as the General drove up, Mr. Jefferson advanced to meet him with feeble steps. (...) They embraced again and again; tears were shed by both, and the broken expression of 'God bless you, General,' 'Bless you my dear Jefferson' was all that interrupted the impressive silence of the scene..."

I'm not crying.

Among the many highlights of the trip was a poignant visit in November 1824 to an ailing Thomas Jefferson at his Virginia mountaintop, Monticello.

He also visited Eliza Hamilton, but of course that's not mentioned here cause whever Hamilton was brought up in this book (when he was alive) it was never mentioned before that they were close. Okay, then.

It was while he was at La Grange in February 1800 that Lafayette learned of George Washington's death on December 14th, 1799. The French government did not allow him to attend the funeral ceremony that Napoleon arranged to honor Washington on February 8th at Les Invalides in Paris.

That's lowwwwwwww... Poor Lafayette, man! :(

So, two things happened in '82: Henry Laurens was released from imprisonment in April- and John died in August.
We're already in '83 and neither has been mentioned so far. I can't.

Listen, the problem with this book isn't even this book's fault per se. It's just the fact that I've read a couple books about Lafayette (focused, predictably, in his military career and his important role in the American Revolution) so basically I'm getting nothing new, AND I'm getting the same old content in a very lineal narrative style so it's not even "cool" to read. So, not (entirely) the book's fault.

"I shall now proceed to dislodge Lafayette from Richmond," Cornwallis wrote to Henry Clinton in New York. "The boy," he said, "cannot escape me."

Well, honey, I've got news for you...
