So Goggs is in fact The Schemer Merton and he conned poor old Tom who ended up with a saviour of sorts..

So Tom Henceforth meets James Goggs on the train to Brighton and agrees to work for him. They ate soot-and-sulphur sandwiches seasoned with the remains of a delinquent ham that had died the death of a thousand cuts...

But by then Alma Nollekens was Mrs Zobrany, and her husband the happiest man in the world.

Madame Alice: Impossibly ugly as she might appear to be conventional eye, men found her (to quote the label on the sixpenny bottle of relish) 'piquant and appetising'.

And so Zobrany marries Alma. All very pleasing it is too.

So far, so wonderful. I am very, very impressed. I'm only about 50 pages but this is unusual and original, and very well written. It's more early 20th Century London underbelly stuff, which in itself ticks all my boxes, however when it's done this inventively then it transcends any genre. Perhaps I'm getting carried away. Watch this space.
