Whereas All The Pretty Horses and The Crossing are odes to land and landscapes, Cities of the Plain focuses instead on what life is like these places, wrestling that element from a background note in those previous instalments and dragging it to the front.
The dialogue is crisp, sharp like split obsidian, and drives so much, but that means the poetry of McCarthys descriptions doesn’t shine quite as much.
