Emma Bull’s 1987 novel War for the Oaks is widely considered by critics and fans to be the first modern "romantasy" (romance-fantasy) book.
Interesting and laugh out loud funny - heroine discovers she is in the middle of a fairie war and has a “bodyguard” she hates:
"If somebody wants to blow me away," she said, trying to keep her voice even and failing, "he has to get you first. I'm sure to die happy.”
