So far only ONE of the page numbers referencing elsewhere in this book have been correct.

Zen master Sengai Gibon (1750-1837):

old pond--
Basho jumps in
the sound of water

An anonymous senryu:

tying her sash
she pats her hips once
in praise

Hattori Ransetsu (1654-1707) was another pupil who was very close to Basho:

one blossom of plum--
and one blossom's worth
of warmth

Enomoto Kikaku (1661-1707) was a student of Basho's--possibly his favorite:

the warbler
sings its first song
upside-down

Addiss on translating Basho's most famous haiku:

old pond--
a frog jumps in
the sound of water

"As noted before, nouns in Japanese can be singular or plural, so there may have been more than one pond or more than one frog--but one of each seems sufficient."

All through the chapter on tanka (5-line poems with 5-7-5-7-7 syllables) I was like, "These poems have too many WORDS and FEELINGS in them."

Haiku has ruined me.
