Felt sorry for the Sophie given most of her family, but I'm quickly losing all sympathy I had for her. She is hypocritical, argumentative, and runs so hot and cold I have no idea what she thinks about the Lazarus, despite her (meandering and boring) POVs. I feel like he should move on and see if there are women who actually like him (but ofc the others are all inferior to her, right? 🙄)

No, but he did see it, and he always would, because he looked only with his eyes and didn't see beyond. Yet. One day he would learn what was important.

Love. Such a small word with such a devastating effect on the person who suffered it. Love had turned Maria from a vain creature whos head was filled with dancing and the latest fashion, into a busy wife and doting mother. Into a woman who gave away her once-precious gown to a sister form whom she wanted only the best.

How nice it must be to share an evening in company with someone who was there by choice- someone who enjoyed spending his time with her, even if it was just to sit quietly and read a book or admire the garden together.

Her feet wouldn't be warm and dry for hours, and her hair would frizz. Not that she was vain about her hair, but, good Lord, a woman had to have something in her favor, something that didn't make her cringe when she looked in the mirror.

Needs. Some women knew what they wanted - or thought they knew - and demanded it at the top of their lungs. Some women kept their needs to themselves, afraid of them. As a consequence, the second sort of woman never got what she wanted, while the loudest voice, accustomed to getting its own way , never felt the value of what it had. It was never satisfied, never content.

Not as good as the last book of hers I read but still entertaining.
