What can I say? It was a wild ride - but still a better one simply but the virtue of not being set in r*ssia (tw for a minor r*ssian character featured still). I did learn a bit of 1914 China, right after the Emperors and just before the communists. Upsetting enough though, the Chinese vampires - chiang-shi - are remarkably similar to their European counterparts :( I was hoping for some diversity...

A Japanese count (?) appeared to spice things up with usage of Japanese terms for vampires and demons. As for the history, by far I learned that Japan allied itself with the British back in 1914 - prior the war which, contrastingly, doesn't really seem imminent in this particular book.

The most classic (I scorn thou!) love triangle consisting of a married couple and their very special friend now has an addendum in a 90+ yo Czech vampire hunter who mocks the said couple for their attraction for the said friend - coincidentally, a vampire - mercilessly and tirelessly 🤣 As for the plot, I don't have a clue as for where we are going...

Why oh why - immediately after escaping the clutches of one inhuman regime (r*ssia) - these people deem necessary travelling to China? Next book, they'll go galavanting to Iran, and I'll go mad.
My primary interest in this series lies in learning about the political and social background of the WWI, but hope to do so through these novel is fading away.
