Honestly, I'd actually rather read about Tamarisk and Johnathan, despite the creepy age gap - what is with this author and grown-ass men falling in love with literal children under twelve years of age - because Jake and Jessica (and Jessica's Poor, Disabled, Can Never Fulfill Her Sexually husband) are so boring. And they have their own creepy age gap anyway.

I like this a lot better than I did when I started, but it's definitely not going to be a favorite in this series. I think some of the imagination is gone. Parts of Jessica's story may as well be that of her sister's, her mom's, bla bla. She repeats herself a lot too. and the person who will turn out to be "bad" is obvious as hell which, actually does lend itself to a certain suspense since no characters can see it.

The main kid in the book gets on my nerves. I thought she was going to die earlier but she was saved. It's obvious that another person is a villain of some sort and I'm interested in seeing what his deal is, maybe some more spy shit or someone trying to make a play for Eversleigh. Some parts of the story in this one are interesting / exciting but otherwise it's more of the same. I enjoy it, but am hardly blown away.

Getting better. Was annoyed with the 1st 2 chapters because they're mostly about Romany Jake (who BTW is not actually Romany) and 11-year-old Jessica's fascination with him (and his with her). Now I want to hear more about Amaryllis & other new characters. Other characters have been around for a few books now & they keep playing major roles in each new book & I would like to hear more about the new(er) people.

Correct page count is 345. I don't know, this one seems kind of dumb. I'm wondering if this series just went downhill at this point. Hope not because there are still 7 books after this one. Also I still totally hate this godd@mn cover ok. Ughhh his face is bothering me, wtf is that. He got the hair pomade out and is crooning about it in her ear. "Yo girl, let me poke your eye out with my sexy forelock"

Only got a little bit of reading in so far. Cover bothering me way too much. I just don't like when novel cover hair is obvs not from the right century. She needs to put that Aqua Net down. I don't like the looks of Jake here either. Looks creepy rather than tantalizing. Jessica makes sure to tell us she is just like Carlotta and Lottie, & that hair color determines the Eversleigh ladies' natures. Uh, OK.

Opening thoughts:
1-Cover = meh. Something about the way her head is tipped & the hair.
2-Why is the family tree missing from the front of this book? That's annoying
3-The narrator should be Claudine's daughter but instead it's another of Lottie's daughters (C's half-sister born in last book, who is same age as C's daughter). I'm very curious to know why so while I was gonna wait to start this one I'm reading now.
