Norman Bowker was a veteran of the war who watched Kiowa die in a shit field during monsoon season when they were being mortared. He drove around a lake in his hometown numerous times on July 4 and felt that he had no one to talk to about the PTSD. He killed himself 3 years after writing.

So sad the book is coming to a close. Out of all the anti-war books I've read, this one feels so close to home. It isn't in the far world of WW1 and WW2. It's right here with guys that still breath.
