I am on page 85 of "As I Lay Dying" by William Faulkner. Vardaman Bundren is the youngest son in the family. Vardaman changes from being confused about his mother's death to struggling with grief and loss. He says, "My mother is a fish." He connects her death to the fish he caught because he doesn't understand what has happened. This reveals his emotional confusion and difficulty accepting her death.
