In some weird way, Denzil's character feels like a metaphor for the whole book - the way he throws one or two words out to tease you and draw you in so you'll get hooked and try to figure out the rest of his meaning seems similar to Gross' own style of pulling the reader in. The hooks don't always work, as evidenced by the 1-star reviews, but when they work they REALLY work.

"The thing with dark pools is you never know how deep they might be." And that one line sums up Philip Gross' books perfectly.

I can never quite decide if I like Philip Gross or not. Depending on my mood and mental faculties, I either find him deep and subtle and insightful, or I think "Wtf just happened in this book? Is this even about anything?" Today I have no idea what this book is about, which means I'll probably have to read it again sometime.
