The alphabet of Church Slavonic, based mainly on the Greek alphabet, was developed in the latter part of the 9th century by missionary Cyril in order to make possible the translation of religious literature into the vernacular of the southern and western Slavs and thus facilitate their conversion. Cyril's brother, Methodius, translated the Bible into Church Slavonic, and translations of other religious texts followed
