Status Updates From The Butterfly's Burden

Who am I
behind the city wall? No mother kneads my long
hair with her eternal henna, and no sister
braids it. Who am I outside the wall between
neutral fields and an ashen sky. Be
my mother in the stranger's land. And take me
gently to who I become tomorrow

Echo in echo, and I moved into you
as a name moves from one creature to another.
We were two strangers in two faraway lands a while ago,

I am who saw his tomorrow when he saw you

لا حديقة لي داخلي
وكلك أنت. وما فاض منك «أنا» الحُرَّة الطيبة


No garden for me within me
and all of you is you. And what overflows from you is “I” the free and kind

من يقول لي
الآن دعك من الأمس واحلم بكامل
لا وعيك الحر
حريتي تجلس الآن قربي، معي، وعلى
ركبتي كقط أليف. تحدق بي وبما
قد تركت من الأمس لي: شالك
الليلكي، شرائط فيديو عن الرقص بين الذئاب، وعقداً من
الياسمين على طحلب القلب.....

We are one in two /
There’s no name for us, woman, when the stranger
stumbles upon himself in the stranger. Of our
garden behind us we have the force of shadow. So show
what you want of your night’s land, and conceal
what you want. We came in a hurry from the twilight
of two places at one time, and searched together
for our addresses:

لا أَحَدٌ يستطِيعُ
الرجوع إلى أحد. تصنع الأبدية
أشغالها اليدوية من عمرنا وتُعَمِّرُ..
فليكن الحُب ضرباً من الغَيْبِ، وليكُنِ
الغيب ضرباً من الحب. إني عجبت
لمن يعرف الحب كيف يُحِبُّ! فقد
يتعب الحب فينا من الانتظار ويمرض
لكنه لا يَقُولُ

ليل ينت غموضاً
مضيئاً على لُغَتِي، كُلَّمَا اتَّضَحَ أَرَدَدْتُ
خوفاً من الغد في قبضة اليد. ليل
يُحدق في نفسه آمناً مطمئناً إلى لا
نهاياته، لا تحف به غير مرآته
ليل ترعرع في شعره
الجاهلي على نزوات أمرىء القيس والآخرين
ووسع للعالمين طريق الحليب إلى قمر
جائع في أقاصي الكلام....

بقَرْنِ الغزال طَعَنَتِ السماء، فسال الكلام
ندى في عروق الطبيعة. ما اسم القصيدة
أمام ثنائية الخَلْقِ والحق، بين السماء البعيدة
وارز سريرك، حين يحن دم لدم، وين الرخام؟


With a gazelle’s horn you stabbed the sky, then words flowed
like dew in nature’s veins. What’s a poem’s name
before the duality of creation and truth, between the faraway sky
and your cedar bed, when blood longs for blood, and marble aches?

هل كنت لي ضفتين
وكان المكان كما ينبغي أن يكون
خفيفاً خفيفاً على ذكرياتك ؟
أي الأغاني تحبين
أي الأغاني؟ أتلك التي
تتحدث عن عطش الحب
أم عن زمان مضى؟


Were you as two embankments for me
and was the place as it should be
light-footed on your memories?
What songs do you love
what songs? The ones
that speak about love’s thirst,
or about a time that has passed?

إن نَظَرْتِ وراءك لن تبصري
غير منفى وراءك
غُرْفَةُ نومك
صفصافة الساحة
النهر خلف مباني الزجاج
ومقهى مواعيدنا... كلها، كلها
تَسْتَعِد لتصبح منفى، إذاً
فلنكن طيِّبين
If you look back you will see only
the exile of your looking back:
your bedroom,
the courtyard willow,
the river behind the glass buildings,
and the café of our trysts ... all of it, all
preparing to become exile, so
let's be kind!

طار الفَرَاسُ مِنَ النَّوْمِ
مثل سرابِ سلامِِ سريع
يكَلِّلُنا نجمتين
ويقتلُنا في الصراع على الاسم
ما بين نافذتين
لنذهب، إذاً
ولنكن طيِّبين

The butterflies have flown out of sleep
as a mirage of a swift peace
that adorns us with two stars
and kills us in the struggle over the name
between two windows
so, let’s go
and let’s be kind
