I like the combination of post-apocalyptic distant future with a Renaissance Europe feel complete with revered genius artists, convoluted political intrigue reminiscent of the Borgia clan and mad alchemists everywhere, as well as a plague sweeping the city. Also that MJH doesn't overexplain things at all.
