So…much…political…exposition. 🥱 Who cares? For a book tagged as a “lusty novel of the old south” + supposedly portraying the decaying antebellum lifestyle, there’s very little dishy soap about the plantation or Southern sexual hypocrisy, or even violent shock value. Instead it’s 90% infodumps about politics + babies being born. YAWN.

This book should’ve been called BABIES BEING BORN. 4 birthing scenes in 150 pages…yawn. Also, the Charles/Kara endgame is way too obvious. Oops, Kara’s husband is gay! Oops, Charles’ beloved mistress just keeled over! They both like sex & are passionate about complimentary subjects! I wonder what will happen?! 😱

There would be 100% more plot content in this short novel if the author would stop having the white males babble on about how much they hate slavery despite owning a 20,000 acre plantation & quit emphasizing how all the white women aside from Kara are bitchy, callous shrews who find sex repulsive (except for Mary Sue Kara, of course, who’s all about embracing her marital duties).

‘Kara slid beneath the cool sheets, glad for the breeze that infiltrated the large, square bedroom. Waiting for Tim to come to her. Waiting, painfully awake, until tiredness rode over her, & she gave way to solitary sleep.’ ….I suspect she’ll spend a lot of nights waiting for Tim. 😶 Dude ain’t exactly a dynamo in the bedroom.

—“Amory, how can you take your son’s wife into that kind of atmosphere? What will people think of us?”
—“I long ago gave up caring what folks think of me,” Amory smiled with malicious pleasure. “I’m sure Kara would enjoy some local color. Not even Ireland offers anything quite so exotic as our slave auctions.”
….*FAIL HORN*

Wow! Has been awhile since I have read a book like this..has that Forever Amber meets Gone with the Wind feel to it. We have Kara who is Irish who has lost everything but her grandpa.. he saved enough money to buy her ship fare to America.
