Her essay regarding the protean role of photography and portraiture — specifically when in tension with the ascendancy of social media and its algorithmic emphasis on relentless self-documentation to supplant memory rather than supplement it — has had me underlining & dwelling on many phenomenal passages. Orange is a discerning, exemplary writer, a true practitioner of critical analysis!

Digging this so far. Michelle Orange — a writer I’ve never heard of prior to picking this up at a bookstore in August only bc a cursory perusal left me spellbound by her lapidary way of writing — dissects the prevailing trends within our increasingly technologically mediated world, with stunning candor and pristine analytical insight. Can’t wait to continue reading & tease out her thoughts on existentialism.

Loved the first essay, even though it’s clear it’s 10 years old
