Status Updates From Hymnen an die Nacht

The last hymn, Hymn VI, can be viewed as a recap of the themes of all the previous. It is the most Christian-oriented, calling for the return to God's grace that manifested though the life and death of Jesus. Novalis urges us to expect and welcome death, pure as the Night, pure as the Past, pure as the love of God, since this world and the light have nothing more to offer. "The heart is gorged but the world hungers"

In Hymn V, the lengthiest one, Novalis sings of the Old World of paganism, of the Greek & Nordic pantheons, when humans thought they were happy but Death brought constant fear into their lives and they used art, poetry and philosophy to give meaning to their brief existence. The Birth from a Virgin, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of Jesus ended their agony and brought Eternal Life, giving birth to the New Man.

In Hymn IV, Novalis hails the Night as the mother of spirituality, of thought, the mother of love and romantic feelings and as the Mother of Day itself which is defined only by it not being the Night. The beauty of the Night is what defines the Day and its cruel, oppressive light.
This Hymn's first verses were the inspiration for C.D. Friedrich's famous painting "Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer” (1818)

In the first 3 (I-III) Hymns, Novalis sings the praises of both Day and Night, their role in Creation and their separate characteristics. The Day, with its light, rules the Material, the physical world, appearing as a benign king but in truth being a cruel dictator. But Night opens the eyes of the soul that can reach beyond matter, to the spiritual, the Eternal, symbolized by the image of the Beloved, mother & lover

Reading the new (2026) Greek translation by M. Papasarantopoulos and his brief introduction about Novalis' poetic & aesthetic universe, how he was influenced by Fichte in the Self/Non-Self mental construct, his notion of the Eternal through the acknowledgement of Present, Past & Future and the Christian and pagan syncretism in the symbol of the Beloved. Though brief, the essay must be read at least twice to grasp it.
