Another great read from Carlson. I loved the setting, the characters, and the reality of life in that time period. The love the family showed for each other and others is what we all need, as we all have imperfections and make mistakes.

Anna goes searching for her granddaughter after she learns that she may have gone back to the commune. She doesn't catch up with Sarah but does rescue another young woman who she takes back to the Inn with her. Clark's mom, Hazel, who has returned from one of her research travels, is very ill. She returns to "her" cabin, but passes away. Her death touches them all.

Anna's granddaughter has returned then taken off. She has been brainwashed by the commune leader and will not forgive her mother, Lauren. The Inn, cabins, and boat rental are all thriving. Anna and Clark are tired and thinking of ways to slow down, but they come up with other ideas to implement that would bring in more business. They want to open another store like her mom had, and more cabins.

A surprise delivery - Sarah. Painfully thin, frightened,
dressed in ragged clothes and unkempt hair, she has returned - but from where? Sarah only revealed that it was a commune on the West coast. Apparently, something went wrong there and many left, including Sarah.

1978 - Anna, Clark, and Lauren, running the Inn at Shining Rivers together, are grief-stricken, as two years have passed since Sarah, their only granddaughter, and daughter, had vanished. They haven't heard a word from her, which was not typical of Sarah. Henry, the faithful river delivery man, and kind and generous Babette have passed away. Greeley's Groceries now made deliveries, with young Bobby at the helm.
