Second read through this book. I worked with Scott Thompson (the author) for a couple of years. Interesting fellow; quiet. I don't think I fully appreciated this book the first time I read it. I think you need to be both from the area he writes about (the south), and probably a little older so that you appreciate the nostalgia. It's not a "great book," but it's interesting.

"You would think that I would have wanted to climb mountains, see Europe, or see something spectacular now that I'm dying, but I don't. I just want to be with the people I love. That's it... So if you're looking for some reason in life in my end of life rant here it is: to love. That's it, Gus. My college degrees, my career - none of it matters. None of it."

Great story so far about being a young male about to leave High School. There was a part that kind of went sci-fi that I hope doesn't come back again though.
