I am struggling to figure out why I am so disappointed with this, so far.

The writing started out quite poor, in a very specific way: ridiculously short paragraphing. Often a short sentence as the final paragraph of a chapter can be punchy and effective but only because it is in contrast to the norm. However the problem seems to be dissipating as the pages turn.

So far, so the billed self-aware amusing throw-back to the era of pulp adventure stories. With psychic lizard people.
