Conner was captured by the Darkhands and trapped in a shadow box. A shadow box is a contraption made to make someone feel guilty using dark magic. It makes Conner feel dirty and terrible until he learns that his sister has also been captured. He is taken out of the shadow box and brought to a lab to be studied when he finds his sister and Melenie.

Melanie, Conner, and Lexa all kindled at the same time. Kindling is when somebody opens themselves up to the light and gains powers from it. With the light there is also darkness and the darkhands are planning something big. The darkhands attacked Conner, Lexa, and Melanie while they were at Disneyland. Conner was taken by the darkhands while attempting to save Melanie's little sister, Madi.

Loved it. Excellent book for middle schoolers. Braden Bell is a very good writer.
