This book, to my surprise, is so broad a recollection of history, spanning from 200 B.C. unto 1600 A.D., which is quite impressive. No wonder it requires so many pages of observational reading! Due to my ignorance of The Old World, excluding the post 1800s, which being an American may be somewhat conducive to toward breeding, I was surprised the book was so long; but now, that the book is so small, having brevity.

Initially a little dry with lots of specific details about provinces, legions etc., as Gibbon wants to describe the state of the empire before its fall. Once the year of the five empires begins, the narrative is very compelling and easier to follow.
