Counterparts: disturbing and heartbreaking.

I just love these sudden twists in Joyce’s stories and he’s just so good at it, but there’s something interestingly different about this one. He -excessively- used the word “thirst” as a literary device to allude to the serious and dangerous issues/nature of the main character.

A little cloud: “A cloud of smoke in which he had taken refuge”

Melancholic and ethereal short story of incessantly hiding behind little clouds to protect oneself against the wistful sadness that comes with living an unfulfilling life.

Easily one of my favourites too!!!

“One human being had seemed to love him and he had denied her life and happiness…”

“She seemed to be near him in the darkness. At moments he seemed to feel her voice touch his ear, her hand touch his. He stood still to listen. Why had he withheld life from her? Why had he sentenced her to death?”
