on page 431 Woolf remarks “Shiratori was himself critical of historians who conceived of world history as ‘the history of Europe with a part of Asian history appended’”, I can’t help but get the feeling this chapter is the appendage to the chapter on the Great Germans necessary to call this a global history

So this chapter sucked lmaooo. May be a hot take? Idk and idc. Literally could have just been one sentence: “historiography didn’t exist without our beloved European nations and nowhere else matters🫶🏼✌🏼🤠🙂↔️🫡”-Woolf. Like how are we only going to give a paragraph to a page for some important contributors but then go on tangents that don’t matter.

On p439 when Woolf has the subheading of “Africa: Written History and Oral Tradition Revisited”, I thought to myself, “huh we haven’t talked about Africa in a minute.” The first sentence of the section then states, “Africa, which has not featured prominently in this book, so far”. WOOLF GET OUT OF MY HEAD! GET OUT! YOURE NOT WELCOME!!!

Woolf’s thesis states how history did not start in Europe but then precedes to explain Chinese, Islamic, and Japanese historiography using a German term. Amazing, thank you so much. I love it here. At least the first two chapters of this book have been 60% Europe, 15% Arabian peninsula, 15% China/Japan, and 10% other. World history my butt, GIVE ME INDIGENOUS HISTORIOGRAPHY UGH!
