“The goals [of a Waldorf education] can be met in a wide variety of settings, with an infinitely wide possibility of curricula, through the myriad possibilities of human personality.”

This guy (though I quote him quoting Nancy Parsons Whittaker here) is articulating something about my life I didn’t quite know how to articulate myself. Ceci n’est pas une pipe!

Sagarin’s discussion of charters is also good. He gives light treatment to the greater socioeconomic diversity in public schools & Waldorf education’s social mission; to the relationship of public school teachers to anthroposophic educational methodology (equally nuanced at private ones too!); and to the issue of what exactly “state” control of education means and why it scares Waldorf schools. Good questions!

“As Waldorf education became more established in the United States, its promise as a model for education generally was compromised, in part, by its objectification. By coming to reside, or to be seen to reside, in specific schools only, it forsook its status as a way to discuss how teachers teach and children learn, and became much more than that: an exclusive culture, ideology, and institution.”
