Call me delusional, but to me the beginning of this book feels like the beginning of "The Fellowship of The Ring". The way Hugo tells us about the common population of Paris and proceeds to explain the upper classes, their titles and their standing in the society as well as their personalities reminds me of Tolkien introducing us to Hobbits and the Shire. They also have a similar humorous undertones :)

Beautiful book. Hugo's prose is a tad more journalistic than Dostoyevsky or Dickens, but it still reads as a riproaring adventure more than anything else. Amidst longwinded descriptions of Paris and architecture, of course.

"The devil take you!" growled Maitre Andry
"Maitre Andry" said Jehan, still hanging by the capital, "hold your tongue, or I'll drop on your head." Maître Andry looked up, seemed to callculate for a square of a moment the height of the pillar and thee weight of the little rogue, multiplied in his mind that height by the square of the velocity, and was silent.
//haha I didn't expect it to have my style of comedy.
