Truly fantastic, a reader's writer if there ever was one. Got into a feud with Hitchens, but I can honestly say Leys is a much better essay writer than Hitchens (and being Belgian is not limited to the Anglosphere). But imagine if Hitchens could have gotten over his political and atheist bugbears and could have written deeply insightful essays on Chinese culture as well--that's Simon Leys.
