I first read this in 1945 when I had read all the Arthur Ransome’s up to date. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I am just passing it plus it’s two sequels to my two granddaughters , 13 and 11, (;I have already given them my set of A.R’s ) but I am reading them first. They really are very good and a complete escapist tonic during lockdown .

Having had a rainy afternoon with no books on our (real life) to read shelf we found one we were saving for summer reading and began it this evening. This is wonderful, so far it's hard to believe it was written by a 14 and 15 yr old!

I do like it, but I have to admit I'm not going very fast it picking it up often. that may be how it goes, or it may just be early.
a lot of charm and atmosphere; not a lot of momentum.

Oh boy, so good in this brief sample so far. Hope that can keep up. I'm always confident it will...but it so often doesn't!
