The ending feels a bit meh. Although the last chapters gave us insight into some of the other characters — and at least this one she specified the (obvious) motive — I wanted to read more about Lily and Robert and have the story of the first body wrapped up. It’s like the author wasn’t sure what to make of it once she’d begun it. Overall, a decent novel.

I remember working out the whodunnit and why fairly early on, then waffled all over as memory failure reared its head, alternating with recall. But this novel is more about the characters, Robert’s growth, and the village with some history thrown in (how things like book burning keep cycling into current affairs) than whodunnit. I’d like to know more about Lily and Robert, but alas it’s the last book.

First book of the new year is the last book in the Grace & Favour series. Light reading for a grey day with actual white fluffy-sticky-icy stuff on the ground. I like the two main characters. They’re fun to read, and the plot is easy to visualize. And even when the mystery is so-so like the last book, the characters make the novel engaging, especially with verbalizing.

I am actually binging this series less for the mystery but for the history tidbits. Admittedly the mysteries are not really strong, but I am loving the tidbits...
