I am forty-six pages in, and I am furious. Wright doesn't ease me into his childhood; he quite literally drops you into it: the hunger, the violence that comes from inside the home and outside it, the way a Black child in the Jim Crow South was required to shrink himself into something survivable. The rage I feel reading this is clarifying. I want to look away and I absolutely will not. I need to feel all of it.
