A million things won’t be simple or easy in the next few weeks, but this, right now, feels the way it should. This, right now, is effortless. It’s as easy to be with Patrick as it was impossible to stay away from him.

“He wants you so much, he’d let you be with another man if that’s what he needed to do to keep you.” I nod. “I want you so much that if I was him, I’d kill that other man.” My eyes dart between Patrick’s as I try to guess if this is poetry or hyperbole or the honest-to-God truth. “And I’d spend another fifty years in prison,” he says, “and it’d still be worth it.”

I wonder if sexual frustration exacerbates blood-alcohol level. It sure feels that way. If I get pulled over on the short drive between here and my house I’ll have to say, “I had only two beers in two hours, officer, but then I made out with a lumberjack. You know how it is.”
