‪“Desire is far from pleased with anything that appears welcoming and agreeable. Whereas everything elusive attracts it, everything that rejects it is seductive. Without knowing it, It digs the bed of this torrent that always betrays it. Desire imagines the world in terms of this absurd division between desirable and non-desirable.”

“Job is quite a different question. Job is unthinkable for the Greeks and their modern successors. Imagine an unyielding Oedipus who scoffs at fate . . . who persists in treating oracles as sinister traps for scapegoats . . . He would have the whole world against him — Hellenists, Heidegger, Freud . . . He would have to be killed on the spot or put away in a psych ward for insuperable repression.”
