Just finished the 'title' work of the book: The Death of Ivan Ilyich.
Oh my GOD.
Excellent, excellent read. I've never seen death written so well in any piece of media I've ever consumed.
All of our contradictions, ambitions, the culmination of one's life. All put so beautifully and tragically well.
Truly one of those works that will stick with me for the rest of my days. Wow. I cannot rave adequately.

The sense of impending doom is one I cannot shake, Mr. Tolstoy.

Was really worried I would hate this, but I'm having a good time! This first story was like actually interesting and well written. I think I was sorta traumatised after Henry James' short story collection pulled my soul out through my nose (Bad!). I do like that even in the 1850s dudes were thinking war was futile and wrong, sorta an ever present idea I suppose.
