I'm enjoying Lee's commentary on The House of Mirth. It brought the comparison between Lily Bart and Gwendolen Harleth to mind and sure enough: "And she is also a grand tragic heroine, fit to take centre stage with Manon or Emma Bovary, Gwendolen Harleth or Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Anna Karenina or Isabel Archer..." (204).
