Annie asks Jake why he fought for the South in the Civil War if he thinks slavery is bad. Jake uses the lame popular states rights defense that if left to their own devices, all the slave states would eventually abolish slavery on their own.

Annie gets shot in the side and travels at breakneck speed on horseback LIKE A BADASS. Jake doesn't even realize she's wounded until they stop for the night and he sees that she's covered in blood.

Unbelievable? Yes. More interesting than any of the contemporary stuff I've read lately? HELL YES. :D

I love Western HRs because there's always a scene in which the hero and heroine are forced to share an uncomfortably intimate ride on a horse. Without fail. Every. Damn. Time. I should be tired of this trope, but it amuses me.

There's a mangy cat in this story. That makes me so happy! :D

a cool gambler is bringing Annie back to her ranch - after she was hung. Good beginning.

Interesting storyline, I just find that I'm totally not interested in the two main characters :(

Annie is such an interesting character.

A look of sad understanding touched Annie’s eyes. “It’s funny,” she said softly, “it seems we’ve come so far together, but now we’re right back where we started. Just a couple of sniffing dogs.”
