5/28.5:6. Bind Your Hair. The unnerving experience of visiting one’s fiancé’s family for the first time is amplified by the presence of locals - one in particular - and then goes off the scale with some enigmatic children and perplexing semi animalistic rituals in the woods.

4.5/23.5:5. The View. Having very recently re-read this in We Are For The Dark, it seemed a bit less intimidating and themes stood out a bit more clearly. Nothing stays the same; consistency is insanity (or the opposite may be true!). But the bigger picture, if there is one, continues to be just out of reach.

The Waiting Room. 4/19:4. Routine ghostly tale, though being by Aickman it has a mysteriously natural atmosphere and still seems to hide some secrets.

Choice of Weapons. 5/15:3. This feels a different story to the one I read last time. Barely any of the details register in my memory. Which is quite fitting for a story of deceptive appearances (barely doing justice to the theme which is so much more complex than “deceptive appearances”). So many interesting and telling details and (deliberate I assume) anomalies that I clearly didn’t pick up on last time.

Ringing the Changes. 5/10:2. Indisputable classic, never fails to delight (provably not the right word!). Perfect atmosphere, dialogue and general menace with minimal attempt to explain. Though the events and the meaning are all too plain.

The School Friend. 5. Beautifully tense and somewhat obscure with lots of undercurrents that are quite elusive and defy grasping. Dark indeed.
