It’s so interesting trying to understand Stephen’s gender identity. Of course at the time of writing of this book gender was not considered, and sexuality was seen as a condition. This is considered a lesbian story, with Stephen then having to be a butch. But I’m pretty sure if this was written with modern vocabulary it would be clear “she” is transmasc. But for now I selfishly choose to read her as butch.
