Status Updates From Milton's Paradise Lost

"And what may else be remedy or cure
To evils which our own misdeeds have wrought,
He will instruct us praying, and of grace
Beseeching him, so as we need not fear
To pass commodiously this life, sustained
By him with many comforts, till we end
In dust, our final rest and native home."

(Book XI)

I am only 3 books in but Paradise Lost having a mere 3.86 average on Goodreads makes me feel bleaker about the state of modern literacy than maybe any other indicator of our collective brainlessness

On the advice of Benjamin McEvoy, for this reread I'm reading along to an audiobook because epic poetry gains much from being read aloud. It's really interesting and engaging to do it this way, and the reader's emphasis and phrasing helped to clarify some of the language in ways I did not expect. I need to do this when I get around to rereading Homer and Virgil next year.
