why does it have to get good at the end. Why? And that old guy I resented, don't make him redeemable now, that's just not done.

We have 7 hours of the audiobook left and it got interesting.
Aside from the fact that people in books have better luck in romance than me, I'm also intrigued by a mothers indifference, and being in business in the 1800s - a time where women couldn't even have bank accounts in their names. This sounds so willddddd

Why is a child being forced to raise a child, and talk about being a great mother. This got dark again, quick.

Fictional characters have better luck at getting engaged than me, and also in finding love. This is rather bleak.

Why is a grown adult bullying a child for his appearance, this is so bizarre to me, even for a book wrote for when it was. It's still commonplace for adults to make fun of kids (personal experience) and I have no idea why. In over 200 years we haven't progressed much in those terms, as far as societal standards goes.
