توی داستان اول ، خداحافظ کلمبوس، فیلیپ راث به مسئله‌«رویای آمریکایی» از زاویه‌ فروپاشی، طبقه، موفقیت، هویت، یهودی‌بودن، جنسیت یا تناقض‌های جامعه‌ی آمریکایی پرداخته ، فهرست خیلی خوبی داریم از نویسنده های دیگه هم نسل راث که به همین رویای آمریکایی پرداختن . اتفاقایک جور خانواده‌ ادبی نسبتاً بزرگ پشت سرش ایستاده از سال بلو، جان فانته و جان آپدایک بگیر تا آرتور میلر و دان دلیلو.
این داستان عالی بود ولی ترجمه نخونید

«How would I ever come to know her... for as she slept I felt I knew no more of her than what I could see in a photograph.»

یه گونه از راوی غیرقابل اعتماد هست که ویلیام ریگان بهش می‌گه Naīf. غیرقابل‌اعتمادبودنِ این راوی حالت یه خودفریبی آیرونیک داره و بهترین نمونه‌هاش مربوط می‌شه به رمان‌های ادبی دهه ۵۰ و ۶۰. نیل کلوگمنِ این داستان هم یه نمونه‌ی همواره آیرونیکه و قابلیتشو داره با دوستان بشینیم وساعت‌ها کالبدگشاییش کنیم.

You Can’t Tell a Man by the Song He Sings: had to do this one cold turkey since it’s not included in the audible audiobook but neat little slice of life in the world of high school education… not exactly a foreign country to me. Probably the least Jewish of the collection.

Epstein: so very Jewish.

Defender of the Faith: equal parts hilarious and frustrating. This is maybe the most accurate depiction of what it’s like to work in education.
