I thought, sitting there, that everything is magic. Using things connects them to you, being in the world connects you to the world, the sun streams down magic and people and animals and plants grow from sunlight and the world turns and everything is magic.

Shakespeare must have known fairies, probably quite well.

did you ever read so much SF that you start thinking you don't know quite what's impossible any more?

I'm so glad I have my own copy. I can read them again and again. I can read them again and again on trains, all my life, and every time I do I'll remember today and it will connect up. (Is this magic? Yes, it is a sort of magic, but it is more just reading my book.)

I want to live. I thought I had to live for both of us, because she can't live for herself, but I can't really live for her.

What I mean is, when I look at other people, other girls in school, and see what they like and what they're happy with and what they want, I don't feel as if I'm part of their species. And sometimes—sometimes I don't care. I care about so few people really. Sometimes it feels as if it's only books that make life worth living, like on Halloween when I wanted to be alive because I hadn't finished Babel 17.

I don't mind the cold all that much, what I do mind is the way the days are so short.

I've had periods for two years. I was afraid they'd stop me being able to see fairies, but they made no difference at all, whatever C. S. Lewis thought about puberty.

Y si os digo que a veces me dan ganas de llorar porque me parece enternecedora la gran pasión que Mori siente por los libros, ¿me juzgaríais? Porque me está sucediendo.

Nobody else saw [the fairies] them. You can only see them if you already believe in them, which is why children are the most likely to. People like me don't stop seeing them. It would be insane of me to stop believing in them. But lots of children do when they grow up, even though they've seen them.

One of the first questions they asked me was about what kind of car my father has. "A black one" didn't go down too well. They couldn't believe I didn't know.

So sex, necessary evil to produce children. That's normal.

One of the things I've always liked about science fiction is the way it makes you think about things, and look at things from angles you'd never have thought about before.
From now on, I'm going to be positive about sex.

You can almost always find chains of coincidence to disprove magic. That's because it doesn't happen the way it does in books. It makes those chains of coincidence. That's what it is.

Twins are clones, too. If you looked at an elm tree you'd never think it was part of all the others. You'd see an elm tree. Same when people look at me now: they see a person, not half a set of twins.

The Welsh language lost out. Welsh was my grandmother's first language, my mother's second language and I can only fumble along in it.
