The last chapter begins much like most of the previous: repetitive whining. Skimmed chunks of it. For the most part, while its ideas and credos are true and worthy, these pages since 244 on have been a manifesto of a troubled youth's soul. The book does end with 2.5 pages of stronger sense of purpose and even hope.
I suggest, though, if you read this book, closing and putting it aside at page 242.

Then we get to page 243, a chapter about recovering from his injuries and connecting with the girl of his dreams and beginning that transition from military to civilian life. It begins okay in the same nature as all the previous pages, but now it's become a ton of naval gazing and self-sabotage and sob story, and with 80 some pages to go it's difficult to read. It has lost its energy and appeal.

This has been a very fun and reminiscent read. I think it works very well for someone who's been in prior service and or maybe is familiar with military biographies. The author has done an excellent job of living in the moments he's writing about, no holds barred. It is an emotional, manly, and exquisitely plaintive conversation with self and life.

My plane read, brought this novelized military biography to read and leave, but enjoying it enough thus far to consider keeping it.

the whole tangent on feminism and military relationships was so random but really interesting from the author’s perspective. i actually agreed with a good bit of it

the writing is so well done and comedic. also tale as old as time, soldier falls in love with a stripper pre deployment lmao. but awww they pinky swore! walton is reminding me so much of my bf who’s also in the army infantry lol they act basically exactly the same. replace me with the stripper and we’ve got basically the same story.
