I'm going to be sad to see this book end. All must die - books and authors included, but that don't mean it's ... something to celebrate.

He lay down in his blankets. It was growing dark, long late midsummer twilight in the woods. He wanted to go down to the river to bathe but he felt too bad. He turned over and looked at the small plot of ground in the crook of his arm. My life is ghastly, he told the grass. -- C.M.

This is really, really good stuff. If I could have enjoyed the start as much as I'm enjoying the end this would have been much more enjoyable. Ironically, the start was just as good as the end!
